World number 71 Jordan Thompson will take on 49th-ranked Richard Gasquet in the first round of the 2023 Mallorca Open on Monday. The winner of this match will face either Feliciano Lopez or Max Purcell in the next round. This is the third time that the pair will meet, with Thompson having won both previous matches. One of those came on the grass, though that was back in 2019. Thompson had an excellent start to his grasscourt swing this season as he finished as the runner-up in the Netherlands, coming up just short against Tallon Griekspoor in three sets in the final. He made another positive start in London last week but ran into a solid Cameron Norrie and bowed out in three sets after winning the first. The Australian is now 27-15 for the year and 8-3 on the grass, which is certainly one of his favourite surfaces. Having gotten the better of this opponent in the past, Thompson will be firmly expected to come out on top here.
Meanwhile, Gasquet had a difficult time on the clay and saw his rank slip from 41st to 55th between March and May this year. However, since stepping onto the grass, the Frenchman has looked much better. He reached the quarter-final in Stuttgart, where he overcame Christopher Eubanks and Stefanos Tsitsiapas before he was beaten by Jan Lennard Struff. In Halle, he was drawn against Jannik Sinner in the first round and went into the match as a huge underdog. However, Gasquet put on another excellent showing against the world number nine but came up short in a hard-fought three-set battle. The Frenchman is 15-17 for the year and 2-2 on the grass. He gets the underdog tag again here but should not be written off on that basis.
