The 2023 US Open quarter-final sees 20th-seed Jalena Ostapenko facing off against sixth-seeded Cori Gauff. A spot in the semi-finals and a matchup with either Sorana Cirstea or Karolina Muchova awaits the winner of this contest. Jalena Ostapenko pulled off a big upset in the fourth-round by knocking off current world number one Iga Swiatek 2-1. Along with Swiatek, Ostapenko also pulled off victories against Paolini, Avanesyan and Pera. The 26-year-old Latvian had previously been in a tough stretch of form in the build up to this tournament. She suffered a pair of second-round and a first round exit in her last three events. It certainly hasn’t been a cakewalk for Ostapenko to equal her best ever finish in the US Open. Each one of her previous four matches have gone to three sets. On the year, Ostapenko has a record of 32 wins and 16 defeats. This includes her current mark of 17 wins and 10 defeats on hard courts.
American Cori Gauff is back in the quarter-final on her home soil of the US Open after being eliminated at this stage by Caroline Garcia in 2022. A win here would equal the 19-year-old’s best finish in this tournament and would also mark her second ever Grand Slam semi-final appearance. Gauff, who holds the world number six WTA ranking, has experienced a meteoric rise in the past two years. She broke through to her first Grand Slam final in 2022 with a runners-up finish in the French Open. In 2023, Gauff is on an absolute tear playing in USA based competitions. She was crowned champion of the WTA Washington and Cincinnati events, both taking place within two weeks of one another in August. Following her triumph in Cincinnati, Gauff has now gone on to win her last nine consecutive matches. That record extends to an incredible 15 wins and only one loss when going back to the beginning of August, all taking place on hard courts.
Ostapenko got the better of Coco Gauff when the two faced off in the Australian Open earlier this year. However, Gauff has put together an incredible run of form in the last few months and is poised to take her revenge on the Latvian here. The young American phenom will certainly have the home support behind her here which is sure to give her a lift. Playing some of her best tennis at the moment and on the familiar courts at Flushing Meadows, we like Gauff to make her first US Open semi-final. Our Cori Gauff vs Jalena Ostapenko prediction is for Gauff to win and cover the -2.5 game handicap.
