Internacional have stormed their way to the top of the Brazilian Serie A and could be looking at their first-ever Brasileirao title. After seven consecutive wins, they find themselves top with 59 points and a game in hand over Sao Paulo who are second. Their opponents for this game are none other than continental-chasing Gremio. The visitors arrive here in 6th on 51 points, four clear of Fluminense in 7th, and in good shape to secure a place in the Copa Libertadores qualifiers.
Internacional dismantled their closest rivals, Sao Paulo, last week running out 5-1 winners. After a barren run of nine games without a victory between November and December, the home side have turned their fortunes around with seven consecutive wins in Serie A. 23 points from the last 30 on offer is also the best return among all teams in the division across the last 10 games and their home record has also played a huge role in their surge to the summit. Four wins in a row in Porto Alegre for Internacional leaves them with 34 points from a possible 45 at home this season, a tally only bettered by Atletico-MG.
As for Gremio, they have taken the term ‘draw specialists’ to a whole new level this season with half of their games ending a stalemate. That’s right 15 of their 30 league games so far this term have finished as a tie but with just three defeats to their name, they find themselves in contention for a Copa Libertadores position. Gremio haven’t lost a league game since October but they have drawn each of their last three matches and won just three of their last 11 games in all competitions.
