Top seeded Iga Swiatek is in her first Wimbledon quarter final. The world number one takes on unseeded Elina Svitolina for a place in the last four. The winner of this match will face either fourth seeded Jessica Pegula or unseeded Marketa Vondrousova in the semi-finals. Swiatek has won the three other Grand Slam events but is yet to do so on the grass of Wimbledon. Some good performances have been made so far in this tournament. Only six games were lost in her first two matches before taking on the 30th seeded Donna Vekic. Swiatek got the win in straight sets but the second set went to 7-5. Her Wimbledon run nearly came to and end in the fourth round against the 14th seed Belinda Bencic. Swiatek lost the first set on a tie-break and was match point down in the second set. Swiatek responded like a champion though and eventually won 6-3 in the final set. There's been one previous match against Svitolina with Swiatek winning in straight sets but that was in a clay court tournament.
Elina Svitolina is bidding to reach her second Wimbledon semi-final. The other was achieved four years ago when losing in straight sets to Simona Halep. Svitolna was ranked as high as third six years ago but has lost seven Grand Slam quarter finals. Her form dipped in recent years and then she took time off to have her first child. Svitolina has been steadily making her way back up the rankings and was 76th at the start of this tournament for which she was given a wild card to play in. This run to the last eight at Wimbledon has seen her climb to 39th in the live rankings. A wiin here will take her up to 25th. Svitolina has had to go to three sets twice in this tournament. The first was in round two against 28th seeded Elise Mertens in a strange match where each set was won 6-1. The fourth round was a tough match for the 28-year-old as she came from behind to defeat 19th seeded Viktoria Azarenka, winning the final set on a tie-break. We go for over 19.5 games to be played in this match.
