Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on unseeded Gregoire Barrere in the first round at the Halle Open on Monday. The winner of this match will proceed to face the winner of the match between Nicolas Jarry and Corentin Moutet. Barrere starts the week up three places at number 55 in the live ranking, a new career high. The Frenchman has had to grapple with a lack of consistency in recent matches. He goes into this match with only one win from his last four outings. Barrere won his opening round match in Stuttgart as he switched to grass for the season. He was, however, eliminated in the very next round. He has so far won 22 of the 39 matches he has played.
Tsitsipas defeated Barrere in the first round at Wimbledon back in 2018 in their first and only encounter. Though it was five years ago, he will fancy his chances of winning again. Tsitsipas started his grass-court campaign off on the wrong foot as he was eliminated early in Stuttgart. The current world number five has struggled on grass in recent campaigns. He has finished with a losing record on the surface in two of the last four seasons. The Greek number one will hope his form this year allows him to excel on the surface once again. Tsitsipas has so far pout together a record of 31 wins and 10 losses.
Tsitsipas has beaten Barrere before on grass and should be able to win again here. He hasn't been sublime on grass though. That should make this a spectacle for the neutral as Barrere is capable of winning one set. Our prediction for Gregoire Barrere v Stefanos Tsitsipas is for Tsitsipas to win.
