Ghana will begin their quest for another African title with a Group B game against Cape Verde on Sunday. Featuring in a group that also has record winners Egypt, these two will be keen on the three points on offer here. Ghana haven't had a perfect run coming into this game. Their final warm up game ended in a 0-0 draw with Namibia, leaving them with one win in five matches. In four of their last five matches, they failed to score and that will be a major concern for the African giants. Ghana are hereby seeking to avoid another group stage exit, as was the case last time out. To get there, there is a lot of improvement they need. For starters, one clean sheet in seven matches doesn’t sound really great for the African powerhouses. An aging squad may be another factor working against Ghana, added to the absence of some key players.
Cape Verde are making another appearance at AFCON and will hope to have an impact this time. In their 11 matches at this competition, Cape Verde have managed just two wins – against Angola and Ethiopia. Like Ghana, they didn’t wrap up their pre-tournament preps on a high, losing 2-0 to Tunisia in a friendly match. That was the second time in three matches that they failed to score. Their last three matches all produced under 2.5 goals and Cape Verde have scored more than once in just one of five games. They also don’t have a great scoring run in AFCON matches, failing to score in six of their 11 matches there. Cape Verde’s last eight AFCON matches all produced under 2.5 goals.
Two teams without great scoring runs face off here. Both have struggled in front of goal and we don’t expect much difference in this game. We might even see more focus on defending. Therefore, our prediction for Ghana v Cape Verde is for this game to produce under 2.5 goals.
