Euro 2024 hosts, Germany, will take on Ukraine in an international friendly at Weserstadion on Monday. The Germans will not be involved in the qualifiers for the competition next year, but they have lined up several friendlies in the upcoming weeks. The hosts had a poor World Cup campaign by their own high standards last year, failing to make it past the group stages, with Japan and Spain topping Group E. They failed to beat either of those sides and managed just one win over Costa Rica in their final group match. Since then, Germany have played two international friendlies, beating Peru 2-0 and losing to Belgium 3-2 back in March. That loss marked the first loss Germany has conceded in their last 13 international friendlies. While they may not have to go through the long and arduous task of qualification for the Euro 2024, Germany are in the midst of a rebuild and will be tested by the Ukrainians.
Meanwhile, Ukraine will have their work cut for them when they resume Euro 2024 qualifiers later in the week after losing their first match against England back in March. After this warm-up match, Ukraine will face North Macedonia and Malta in quick succession and will see both those fixtures as winnable. Having missed out on the World Cup, Ukraine last competed in the UEFA Nations League, where they finished second in League B Group 1 behind Scotland. In their six matches, Ukraine recorded three wins, two draws, and one loss, scoring six and conceding four. While they will come into this match as the underdogs, they will know that Germany are some way from the force they were a few years ago and will fancy their chances of taking something from this one.
Germany’s poor performance at the World Cup was unexpected, and they’ve since embarked on an overhaul of their squad as they prepare to put on a better showing in their home Euro 2024 tournament next year. The Ukrainians will need the match time but should find it difficult to get the win here. Our Germany v Ukraine prediction: Germany to win the match.
