France and Germany will renew their rivalry when they meet in a friendly match at the Groupama Stadium in France this Saturday. Both sides will later this year be heading for the 2024 Euros in Germany, so this game provides good pre-tournament preparation. France, runners up at the 2022 World Cup, come into this game with the better run of form. They are unbeaten in the last four matches but after three wins they were held 2-2 by Greece last time out. That draw dented their Euro 2024 qualification run, having won all the previous seven group games, including two against a strong Netherlands. The last team, and only one to beat France in their last 10 matches was Germany, in a September friendly game. That happened in Germany, and here France have the chance to give Germany a taste of the same. One area France have been dominant in, is their attack, led by skipper Kylian Mbappe, who has 10 goals in France’s last 10 matches. Seven of those 10 matches had over 2.5 goals and France scored two or more in seven. With 29 goals in eight matches during Euro 2024 qualifiers, France finished as the second-best scoring nation. This is an attribute we expect to see here too.
Germany are seeking a second straight win over France in a space of six months, having won 2-1 in their last meeting. The run up to this game hasn’t been great for the Germans though, and their preps for Euro 2024 haven't been great. Being the hosts, Germany didn’t take part in the qualifiers, thus haven't played competitively since after the World Cup. In the 11 matches they’ve played during that period, Germany managed just three wins. Coming into this game, they are still struggling to find their footing under new manager Julian Nagelsmann. Their close to 2023 wasn’t the best, with back-to-back defeats against Turkey and Austria. Those results made it three straight winless outings for the Germans. There will be particular concerns about their defence, having managed just a clean sheet in 14 matches. The 2-0 loss to Austria in November marked the seventh time in 10 matches that Germany conceded more than a goal. It was however the only time in six matches that they failed to score.
Germany is a side in transition and their inconsistent run shows as much. The visitors have been leaking at the back and will have it tough against France. Germany can however put some confidence on their scoring run, coming here. France, armed with a horde of prolific attackers, will be happy to face a shaky German side. In regard to both teams attacking and defensive runs, we should expect a high-scoring game. Our prediction for France v Germany is for France to win and the game to have over 2.5 goals.
