CFR Cluj will hope that their lengthy European stint of the season will extend, when they play their 15th fixture of 2019/20 against Sevilla in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 32.
Cluj have played four UEFA Champions League qualifying stings before moving through to the round of 32 in the Europe League via a second-place finish in Group E behind Celtic. Cluj come here on the back of a three-match unbeaten run in the domestic Liga 1 after the winter break. However, the Romanians do have a good record in the Europa League. They have won three of their last four matches in the competition and look set to bring the same intent. It gets better at home, as Cluj have won four of their last five Europa League home matches including three in a row. Sevilla are looking to win a record fourth Europa League and have coasted through their group stages, winning their Group ‘A’ with five successive victories before losing their last group game.
Sevilla travel here on the back of a 2-2 draw against Espanyol in La Liga, but haven’t won in four competitive fixtures. However, the visitors will have worries about their away form. Sevilla have lost their last three competitive away matches. It is slightly better in the Europa League, with Sevilla winning three of its last five away fixtures in the competition. Although they have lost their last match in that sequence, it was in a game that had little bearing on the final qualification for Sevilla.
Going purely by the historical record between these sides and how these teams have fared in the Europa League this season, this fixture promises to be a low-goal encounter. Five of Sevilla’s last six matches against Romanian clubs have seen under 2.5 total match goals. Even CFR Cluj have seen the same in five of their six Europa League group stage matches. With the teams so tight with their scoring, that could once again be the case. Additionally, a Sevilla clean sheet at the break could be the way to go, considering how they have been going. Our prime tip, however, goes around the total goals market.
