The ATP Tour 250 series continues with the Dallas Open where the unseeded duo of Emilio Gomez and Taro Daniel are set to face off in the main draw first round on Tuesday on an indoor hard court. It will be the second time they will face each other. Daniel won the first matchup 2-0 in the first round of the 2022 Korea Open. This will be Gomez’s fourth tournament of the year and second in America after the Cleveland Open. The world number 106 reached the semi-finals in Cleveland where he lost 2-1 to eventual champion Aleksandar Kovacevic. The Ecuadorian number one was seeded second in Canberra but was eliminated in the first round by the qualifier Enzo Couacaud as he began his year with defeat. He reached the second round of the Australian Open after a two-hour and 40-minute grueling battle with Liam Broady in the first round. The 31-year-old won two Challenger tournaments last year and made a further four finals. His success in the year saw him break into the top 100 for the first time after rising to 98th. He is currently up four places to 102 on the live ranking.
Taro Daniel has won just three matches to start the year with his latest being in the Davis Cup, defeating Kacper Zuk of Poland in straight sets while representing Japan. The world number 108 was eliminated in straight sets in the second round at the Australian Open by 20th seed Denis Shapovalov. He was eliminated in qualifying at Adelaide and Auckland. Daniel is a former Istanbul Open champion. The two players will go head to head knowing that progress from this round will set up a second-round showdown with fourth seed Miomir Kecmanovic.
Emilio Gomez has the better form of the two to start the season but trails in the head-to-head record. Taro Daniel is more experienced and has played at the top level on a more regular basis. This could go either way therefore our prediction is for three sets to be played and at least one of them going to seven games.
