Third seed Daniil Medvedev starts his Rome Masters campaign on Saturday with a second-round match aainst unseeded Emil Ruusuvuori. The match will be played on an outdoor clay court and will see the winner advance to the third round where a match with either 31st seed Bernabe Zapata Miralles or the unseeded Jason Kubler awaits. Emil Ruusuvuori was on the receiving end the last time he and Medvedev met, which was in this very same round but in Astana in 2022. He will seek to even out the head-to-head record and progress from this round for the first time in his second appearance in Rome. The Finn started things off on a winning note as he battled a three-set thriller with Ugo Humbert that lasted three hours. This should have him warmed up and ready for Saturday's duel. Ranked currently at number 42 in the live ranking,
Daniil Medvedev has had no such issues this season as he is one of the in-form players but not so well on clay. The Russian number one has lost just five matches all season out of the 38 he has played and this form has seen him reach five tournament finals and win four titles including the Miami Masters. A slow start to the year saw him drop out of the top 10 but his devastating form on hard courts has seen him move up to third in the ATP world ranking. Medvedev isn't a strong performer on clay as he is on hard courts and has already lost two of the four matches he has played on the surface. He has also never progressed past this round in his three appearances in Rome so a win for Ruusuvuori here isn't that unlikely.
Daniil Medvedev isn't as strong on clay as he is on hard courts but he should have enough in him to advance past this round as he faces another player equally not as good on the surface. Our prediction for Emil Ruusuvuori v Daniil Medvedev therefore for Medvedev to win.
