Two sides in desperate need of a win in the English Championship for contrasting reasons will be on display when Derby County host Bournemouth. Derby are23rd and just four points above bottom-placed Wycombe Wanderers with 19 points from 23 matches, but are level on points with the two teams above them. Bournemouth slipped outside the top-two and have 42 points from 24 matches but are still comfortably perched in the top-six promotion play-off slots.
Derby lost 1-0 to Rotherham in a crucial encounter between two relegation-threatened teams. The loss meant that Rotherham have now moved above Derby with a better goal difference. Not just that, Derby have now lost three of their last four Championship matches and need a way out of this mini-slump. Worryingly enough, they have lost their last two Championship home matches, each without scoring. To make matters worse, Derby have won just once at home all season long – drawing four and losing seven with just five goals scored.
Bournemouth would love to take advantage of that poor Derby form, especially since they need to get into form themselves. The Cherries lost 1-0 at home to Luton in their last match and have now won just once in their last five league matches – drawing and losing two each. The loss of form couldn’t have come at a worse time because Bournemouth have slipped four points behind the second automatic promotion spot. They are however six points above seventh placed Middlesbrough, so their play-off place is still safe at present. Regardless of their recent form blip, Bournemouth still have one of the best defensive records in the Championship. They have let in just 20 goals so far with only three sides conceding fewer than Bournemouth.
