The qualifier, Marcos Giron goes in search of his first win over top seed Daniil Medvedev at Halle Open on Monday. Medvedev made it to the final here last season and in his third appearance, he will seek to win it all. The Russian arrives here having lost his first match of the season on grass. Medvedev was eliminated in Hertogenbosch in his first match at the tournament. This was his seventh loss of a superb campaign thus far for the world number three. He has claimed 39 wins in 2023 and has played six finals, winning five. This latest match with Giron will be the third between the two players. Medvedev won the first two, with the last coming at the Australian Open in January.
Marcos Giron has not had a season anywhere close to the one Medvedev is having. He has however been better on grass and will hope this lifts him to his first win in this fixture. The American has won two of the three matches he has played on grass so far. Those two wins have enabled him to reach the main draw here for the third consecutive season. He defeated Andrea Vavassori in three sets to qualify for this round and register his 17th win of the campaign. Giron has a career record of 15 wins and 11 losses on grass. He is currently ranked 57th in the live ranking. The winner of this first-round showdown will play either unseeded Laslo Djere or the wildcard Oscar Otte next.
Medvedev has eight wins from the last 12 matches he has played on grass. He will be the dominant player here, with a good run in recent games. Our prediction for Daniil Medvedev v Marcos Giron is for Medvedev to win with straight sets.
