Familiar foes Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev will clash for an incredible 13th time in their careers when they contest the fourth round of the 2023 BNP Paribas Open on Tuesday. After a rocky start to the year where he was unable to get past the second round of his first four tournaments, Zverev has sprung into life in the last month, reaching the semi-final of his previous tournament in Dubai, taking down Jiri Lehecka, Christopher Oconnell and Lorenzo Sonego, before losing to Andrey Rublev in straight sets. He’s carried that form into this tournament with a win over Pedro Cachin (6-1, 6-3) in the first round and went on to win a hard-fought match against Emil Ruusuvuori (7-5, 1-6, 7-5) in the last round. The world number 14 is tied 6-6 with this opponent and will be hoping that he can take the lead in this battle as he hunts down his first title for the year.
Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev has been sensational this year and has one of the best records in the ATP. The world number two player boasts an incredible record of 21-2 this year and is unbeaten in his last 16 consecutive matches in all tournaments. The brilliant Russian came into this tournament off the back of three consecutive tournament wins in Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai, dispatching the likes of Andy Murray, Andrey Rublev, and Novak Djokovic in recent weeks. Zverev got this tournament underway with a win over Brandon Nakashima (6-4, 6-3), and then had a minor scare against Ilya Ivashka in the last round but managed to navigate his way through to a (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) win in the end. It’s undeniable that Medvedev is in the form of his life, and it will take something unbelievable from any opponent to stop him in the form he’s in.
Based on his form and record in 2023, it comes as no surprise that Daniil Medvedev is the heavily fancied favorite in this contest. The Russian has taken on all-comers in recent weeks and is riding an incredible 16-match win streak coming into this match. Zverev has held his own in this contest in the past, but his form has been erratic so far this year, which makes this one that much harder for him. It should be an entertaining match, but we expect the Russian to come out on top. Our Daniil Medvedev v Alexander Zverev prediction is a win for Medvedev.
