We're guaranteed a first time winner in the 2023 US Open women's singles. For Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova, this is their first time in the last four of this outdoor hard court Grand Slam. Sixth seeded Cori Gauff is in the form of her life at the moment. It seems an age since that disappointing first round loss at Wimbledon in June. Since then the American teenager has won two hard court titles in Washington and Cincinatti and is up to fifth in the live rankings. Her opponent will remember the Cincinnati final as it was Muchova who Gauff beat in straight sets to win that title. The 19-year-old has dropped sets in three of her matches on the way to this semi-final. Not so in her quarter final though as only two games were dropped against Jelena Ostapenko.
Like her opponent, Karolina Muchova has only played in one previous Grand Slam final and it was at Roland Garros. Muchova reached the final this year, Gauff in 2022 but both lost to Iga Swiatek. The Czech is in the top ten of the ranking list for the first time in her career and can get as high as sixth if winning this match. Another similarity with her opponent is that Muchova also only lost two games in her quarter final (against Sorana Cirstea) and won the first set to love. Both players are in the form of their life but it's Gauff who we believe can edge her way into the US Open final.
