The match

Not many heavyweights and a bit of an open group in play for the Group H participants in the UEFA Champions League, as Premier League biggies Chelsea play host to Valencia on matchday one at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are coming off a sparkling 5-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League over the weekend making it a four-game unbeaten run (W2, D2) after failing to win in their first two matches of the season (D1, L1). Frank Lampard’s side are the Europa League winners from the previous season and are searching for their first Champions League win since a 4-0 win at Qarabag in November 2017 (D2, L1). Their home record is quite impeccable, though, as the Blues have lost only once at home in the competition since the start of 2014/15 season (W6, D5, L1) although they have drawn their last three during this run. Valencia are coming off a 5-2 loss to Barcelona in La Liga during the weekend, making it just one win in four games (W1, D1, L2) to start their season. Los Che played in the Champions League last season after a gap of three years, but crashed out in the group stage with a record of W2, D2, L2.

Key Statistics

  • Chelsea haven’t lost to Valencia in six matches (W3, D3), but have won just once at this venue (W1, D2).
  • Chelsea have lost only three of their last 22 matches against Spanish sides (W7, D12, L3).
  • Valencia have scored only once in their last five Champions League away matches.

The bet of our experts

Chelsea have been improving this season, after a mixed start and will be confident after a big win in the weekend. Lampard’s side has begun to jel well and that is ominous signs for the visitors. Valencia are on a winless run on the road (D2, L1) from last season and are in fact without an away win in the competition for five games (D2, L3) since their last such win at Lyon in September 2015. Valencia have been frugal on the road in the competition, with eight of their last nine road trips producing under 2.5 goals. This could be another tight encounter.
