A stung Chelsea will look to get back to winning ways, while Aston Villa will hope to build on their last weekend point in the Premier League. Chelsea are fourth in the table with 26 points, while Villa are 15th with 15 points ahead of this round.
The hosts are coming off a surprise 1-0 loss to West Ham at home. The loss puts them 14 points behind the league leaders, although the ‘Blues’ are still firmly in charge of top-four spot. However, for the first time this season Chelsea have lost two league games in a row. This came after a run of six straight wins that propelled them to the top-four. The weekend loss was also the second time they lost at home in the league. It was also the first time at home this season that Chelsea have failed to score. They still average 2.0 goals per game, although with 20 goals against, Chelsea’s defence is beginning to worry a little.
Aston Villa rallied to a 2-2 draw against Manchester United over the weekend that made it four points in two matches. Villa start the round three points above the relegation zone. Although it is not a safe cushion, the point gap is comfortable enough. Regardless of their point at Old Trafford, Villa have just four points in seven away trips this league season. It will be a reunion of sorts for John Terry who goes to his old stomping ground Stamford Bridge and up against his close friend Frank Lampard. They have been leaking goals at an alarming rate, but Villa have been impressive in taking lead against top sides. So far this season, the visitors have taken the lead against Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.
Chelsea will be wary of dropping further points in this fixture, as the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers begin to come closer. Although they were beaten at home in the previous game, Frank Lampard’s men have been impressive at Stamford Bridge in the recent matches. Aston Villa have shown over the weekend that they can frustrate any side. Considering the porous defence of both the sides, we are expecting goals at both ends in this fixture and over 2.5 total match goals.
