Burnley look to extend their advantage at the top of the Championship table when they host Preston North End at their Turf Moor base on Saturday. The league leaders have 65 points, 25 ahead of 11th placed Preston. Burnley have a healthy seven-point lead and look set to make an immediate return to the Premier League. Vincent Kompany’s men have won the most number of matches (19) this season and lost the least (2). They have also scored the most goals (58) and their record of 26 goals conceded thus far is bettered only by just one other team. The Clarets are on a nine-match winning streak in the league and have also made it through to the fifth round of the FA Cup. It has been a rare occurrence to see the team drop points this season. However, in one of the 10 matches that they have, it was Preston who held them to a 1-1 draw at home.
Preston are coming into this match having won just one of their last three league matches. They fell 2-1 at home to Bristol City last time out, a third loss in the four games. That loss saw them drop down, a further four points from the promotion playoff places. The Lilywhites have failed to score twice in the last five league games. They’ve won as many matches as they have lost (11). In the first-leg matchup, Jordan Storey provided a quick response (in five minutes) to cancel Burnley’s opener after just 10 minutes. Ched Evans’ goal in their latest game was a mere consolation but he will be motivated for this game, having scored twice in the last four league games. Four wins in five away matches would give Preston a ray of hope going into one of the toughest matches in the league.
Halting Burnley’s charge back to the Premier League will take a lot. They were, however, unable to get the better of Preston the last time the two teams met. Preston have blown hot and cold all season and come into this match having conceded 10 goals from their last four games across all competitions. Our prediction for the Burnley v Preston North End game is a win for Burnley with a clean sheet.
