Burnley’s survival hopes were improved with a third straight win at the weekend. They are 16th in the Premier League, two points clear of Everton in 18th but from a game more and host 13th placed Aston Villa. Relegation rivals Everton and Leeds (behind them on goal difference from the same number of games played) don’t play until after this match. A win here then would take them five points above the bottom three and only three points behind Villa. Their current situation is something they could only dream about a few weeks ago. They have ten points from the four games played since Sean Dyche was sacked. Burnley have only won five home league games this season. Their record was a terrible one before winning three in a row. Wins over Everton, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers have transformed their season. Only 16 home league goals have been scored but if they were to win both their final two home league games 1-0 no one would complain. They have kept two successive home clean sheets and only conceded 20 goals in their 17 home league matches.
Aston Villa had been in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle. Four points from their last two games has changed that though and they start the weekend eight points above the bottom three. They face Burnley twice in the run-in. A couple of wins for them would clearly delight Everton and Leeds. Villa have only one point from their last three away league fixtures, earned when drawing 0-0 at Leicester. Defeats have come at West Ham and Wolves but they are keeping themselves out of the relegation fight but only just. With Liverpool and Manchester City to play, Villa could do with some points against Burnley if they want a top ten finish. Burnley have the momentum and can get another home win here.
