Even in January, I don’t think it’s too early to call a game a relegation six-pointer because this fixture could go a long way in determining who goes down at the end of the season. Fulham travel to the Amex Stadium, five points off Brighton with a game in hand. Brighton are currently 17th on 17 points but a win for Fulham would see just two points between the pair and Fulham would then have a chance to trade places with the Seagulls if they could win their game in hand.
The extra fixture for Fulham will probably not make for much if they can’t win this game. In fact, a Brighton win could condemn all three teams currently in the relegation zone to the Championship. The home side defeated Leeds on the road in their last league game and they secured a place in the 5th round of the FA Cup at the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Blackpool at home on the south coast. However, Brighton’s home league record since the start of 2020 has been atrocious with just one league win in 18 games at home in the Premier League. The hosts have also managed to keep just one clean sheet during that run at the Amex and their win at Blackpool was their first at home since July.
Fulham were eliminated from the FA Cup as they were beaten convincingly, at home, by Burnley 3-0 to mark three successive defeats for the west London club. Nonetheless, the Cottagers have perhaps deserved at least a point from their last two games against both Manchester United and Chelsea which seen them lose in both by just one goal. Fulham are looking for their first win in eight in the league, they have drawn five of those games but if they want to survive they need to start picking up three points as opposed to just one.
