Inter Milan will head to Lisbon on Tuesday to take on Benfica in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. After holding the second spot in their domestic league for much of the season, the visitors have slipped out of the top four in recent weeks and are currently fifth in Serie A, just outside the automatic Champions League spots. Inter Milan saw off Porto 1-0 in the round of 16, with the solitary goal being scored by Romelu Lukaku in the first leg. Since then, Inter’s form seems to have taken a dip for the worse, managing just one win in the next eight matches, along with three draws and four losses in all competitions. The visitors come into this match having not won any of their last six matches in all competitions, and going up against a high-flying Benfica side could prove to be a very difficult assignment for Nerazzurri.
Meanwhile, Benfica are having one of their best seasons in recent history and have built up a solid lead between themselves and the chasing pack in the Primeira Liga. The hosts lead their domestic title race by seven points and are firmly in the driver's seat to be crowned champions of Portugal at the end of this season. Benfica showed their strength in the previous round of this tournament by demolishing Club Brugge 7-1 on aggregate across the two legs. The hosts conceded a rare defeat in their last league match against Porto, which brought an end to an incredible 10-match winning streak in league competition dating back to mid-January. That loss was also the only one that Benfica have suffered in 21 home matches this season in league and cup competition. Benfica will be looking to bounce back in this one, and against an opponent that has been struggling for form in recent weeks, the home side will fancy their chances of scoring a few goals here and carrying a healthy lead into the second leg.
Benfica have one of the best overall records across the whole of Europe this season and will genuinely fancy their chances of going all the way to the final of this tournament. Their home record this season is incredible, and their attacking play has been a joy to watch when in full flow. It should be an entertaining match, but we strongly expect the hosts to come out on top. Our Benfica v Inter Milan prediction is a win for Benfica.
