Bayer Leverkusen host Ferencvaros in a Group G game on Matchday one of the Europa League group stages. The Bundesliga side made its way to the group stage by finishing sixth in the previous league season. Ferencvaros had to settle down for a Europa League place after narrowly missing out on the Champions League group stages by going down to Young Boys in the play-off qualifiers. The Hungarian side had managed to overcome Prishtina, Zalgiris and Slavia Prague in the previous Champions League qualifying rounds before the Young Boys defeat. Bayer Leverkusen have had a decent start to the new season and are placed seventh in the Bundesliga with two wins, a draw and a loss. They opened the season with a 4-0 win over Lokomotiv Leipzig in the DFB Pokal. Gerardo Seoane’s men have thus lost just once in their last five matches and bring a good account of themselves against Ferencvaros. However, they come into the game on the back of a 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
Ferencvaros started the new season way earlier than Bayer Leverkusen. The Hungarian side have already played thirteen games so far, winning eight of them while losing five times and drawing once. Peter Stoger’s men started the new season on a strong note with four straight victories in the Champions League qualifiers. They have also done relatively well so far in the domestic league with three wins and a loss in four matches so far and are placed third in the league table. Ferencvaros, however, have been highly inconsistent despite their higher win to loss average in the new season. They have lost four of their last seven matches and lost each of their last three away matches, thus not bringing an impressionable away form into the Leverkusen game. Ferencvaros come into the game with a 1-0 win over Budapest Honved in the domestic league.
Ferencvaros have been highly inconsistent in the new season. The Hungarian side have shown glimpses of brilliance and have played well as a unit but have not managed to continue the same in consecutive matches. Bayer Leverkusen are off to a decent start in the new season and should manage to overcome a tricky Ferencvaros side. We are backing Bayer Leverkusen to win this Europa League tie.
