Top seed Barbora Krejcikova and second seed Jelena Ostapenko will on Sunday face each other in the Birmingham Classic final. This will be Krejcikova’s second final of the season and Ostapenko’s first. Krejcikova has been in superb form in Birmingham where she has won all her four matches without losing a set. To advance to the final, she defeated unseeded Zhu Lin by the loss of five games. The win was her 23rd of the season in 33 matches played and moved her into 10th place in the live ranking. Krejcikova has lost four of the six encounters with Ostapenko but having won her last three finals, she will be confident of winning. The Czech number two has a strong record in tour finals. She has won six of the nine finals she has contested. This however will be her first on grass.
Ostapenko hasn’t been as dominant in tour finals as Krejcikova. She has lost more times than she has won. In the 13 finals she has played in so far, she has finished as runner-up eight times. The Latvian has however won on grass before. Considering this as well as her dominance in this fixture, she will be confident of winning here. However, Ostapenko will have to be at her very best, as she hasn’t been very convincing in the tournament. Ostapenko has dropped a set in each of her four matches. In the last two rounds, she was forced to come back from a set down. To reach the final, the current world number 18 battled fourth seed Anastasia Potapova for two hours and seven minutes. This extended the time she has spent on the court to eight hours and 32 minutes. That is close to three hours more than Krejcikova.
Our prediction for Barbora Krejcikova v Jelena Ostapenko is for Krejcikova to win. Even though Ostapenko has the head-to-head advantage in this fixture, we are confident about Krejcikova winning. She has been outstanding in Birmingham and also has a better record in tour finals compared to Ostapenko.
