A grand welcome from the fans await Australia football team as they take to the field for the first time since World Cup 2022 when they host Ecuador in a friendly. The match will be played at the CommBank Stadium in Sydney as part of the two friendlies that were planned out, both against Ecuador. Australia have reached the round of 16 in Qatar which was their best appearance in a World Cup, where they lost to eventual winners Argentina 2-1. Coach Graham Arnold is now looking to kick on from that and make it another successful tenure as he looks to build his side for the next World Cup tournament. They have been in good form going back to the World Cup having won seven of their last nine matches in all competitions and friendlies, with one of those coming via penalties. Form in the friendlies isn’t always an indicator but Australia have won seven of their last nine such international friendlies, drawing and losing one each.
Ecuador played Australia only once before, in a friendly in 2014 when they won 4-3, after trailing 3-0 at half-time. Much like Australia, Ecuador are looking to build on from their 2022 World Cup form where they failed to advance from their group. The South Americans came third in the group behind Netherlands and Senegal as a last matchday 2-1 loss to Senegal halted their campaign. Interestingly, four of their last six matches have ended in draws and the visitors won’t mind another such result here. This result has been a common theme even in friendlies with Ecuador drawing five of their last seven friendlies including three in a row.
