Atletico Madrid saw their game with Athletic Bilbao postponed at the weekend due to snow but their neighbours Real, couldn’t take full advantage. Real Madrid drew 0-0 at Osasuna on Saturday night meaning Atletico still lead the league with a one-point advantage over their city rivals and have three games in hand, this being the first of those three. As for Sevilla they won a thriller with Real Sociedad, 3-2 to leave them 6th, level on points with Sociedad. Like their hosts, Sevilla also have games in hand are well-placed to climb the table.
Atleti come into this game having won each of their last four matches in La Liga but they were beaten last time out in the Copa del Rey by lower-league Cornella. Nonetheless, Diego Simeone’s side are in a strong position to win their first league title in seven years. Atletico have accumulated 38 points having played just 15 games in comparison to Real Madrid (37) and Barcelona (34) who have played 18 times each. Los Rojiblancos also boast the best home record in the league having won seven of their eight games at the Wanda Metropolitano and their only dropped points at home came in a 0-0 draw with Villarreal at the start of October.
Sevilla picked up their third win in four league games with victory over Sociedad on Saturday and Julen Lopetegui’s side look primed to make a push for the Champions League places again this season. This is a game in hand for both these teams to make a mark. Atleti can extend their lead at the top to four points whereas Sevilla could climb into the top four with a win of their own and the form table can do little to split these teams. Sevilla have taken 11 points from their last five games compared to Atletico’s 12 and they have drawn each of their last four head-to-heads.
