Arsenal’s faltering season faces a bigger hurdle on Boxing Day as London rivals Chelsea come visiting the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League. Arsenal are 15th in the standings with 14 points and only four above the relegation zone whilst being a whopping 11 points behind top-five. Chelsea travel here 5th in the points tally with 25 points and only two points behind the second-placed Leicester City.
Arsenal were dumped out of the EFL Cup quarter-final 4-1 by Manchester City which compounded the problems for coach Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have lost three of their last four competitive matches drawing only once. It gets worse in the league as Arsenal have lost 2-1 to Everton last time around making it five losses and two draws since their last win at the beginning of November. The Gunners are struggling for goals and have scored just 12 all season long, which is the fourth-worst scoring record. At home, Arsenal are winless for five league matches drawing once and losing four matches.
Chelsea defeated West Ham 3-0 in a much-needed result for Frank Lampard over the weekend. That stopped Frank Lampard’s side losing further ground coming as it did after two straight losses. They remain the second-best attacking side of the competition with 29 goals which is only second behind Liverpool’s 36. Chelsea have a lot of work to do, though, on their travels. Two straight wins on the road have blotted a start of three wins and two draws. Four of those seven matches saw Chelsea score at least two goals.
