Early relegation contenders América will look to start their climb up the ladder when they host erratic Corinthians in the Brasileirão campaign. The 19th-placed hosts will welcome their 14th-placed visitors to the Estádio Raimundo Sampaio for this ninth-round match. After eight rounds, the hosts find themselves just a point above the basement club Coritiba. In fact, their count of six defeats is the most by any club so far. América are coming off a morale-boosting win though. They defeated Internacional 3-1 in the Cup competition via penalties in the round of 16. That result shouldn’t hide their poor form in the league campaign so far. América have won just four points this season, scored just seven goals and conceded 20. Although their only win has come at home this season, América have aggregated just one goal in the other three home league matches.
Corinthians are also coming off a win in the Cup competition. That made it an unbeaten run of three matches for the visitors, which is their best since the start of March. It is the league form that is of concern as the Corinthians have been erratic so far. They have won just eight points so far which is just a point above the bottom-four. Yet, recent improvements will give hope that there is a turnaround for the visitors. Four of their league points have come from their last three league matches which could be used as a platform of improvement. If they can continue that trend, it would need Corinthians to halt their four-game losing streak away from home in the league.
