Two wins out of two mean Ajax are setting the pace in Group H of the Champions League. Their visitors on matchday three are Chelsea, who recovered from the opening loss to post an impressive victory last time out.
Ajax have picked up a 2-1 win in the weekend Eredivisie fixture making it five wins in a row. The Dutch side is unbeaten this season in all competitive fixtures and have won nine of their last ten matches in all competitions. Ajax have been impressive in their Champions League engagements as well. The hosts have picked up consecutive 3-0 wins over Lille and Valencia to pull three points ahead of the chasing pack. These wins have made it an unbeaten run of six matches for Ajax, winning four of those. Their home form in the competition has been equally impressive. Ajax have now won their last three Champions League home fixtures, each time scoring at least two goals. They have lost only twice at home in the Champions League since the start of 2016. In 15 matches played since, Ajax have scored at least two goals in ten and have won eight of those 15.
Chelsea are slowly hitting the stride under Frank Lampard and are improving with every match. The 1-0 hard-fought win over Newcastle United last weekend was their fifth in a row in all competitions. Even in the Champions League Chelsea recovered from a 1-0 opening match loss at home to Valencia. A 2-1 win over Lille away from home got them back on track. However, the Blues have struggled to be consistent on their travels in the Champions League. They haven’t won twice in a row in the competition away from home since 2013.
Ajax are the form team of the group with excellent performances in both their matches so far. Even in the Eredivisie, Ajax have been consistently pulling impressive results. Chelsea on the other hand are slowly getting to terms with Lampard’s reign. However, their inconsistent away form gives a chance for Ajax to extend their lead at the top in the group.
