Fourth-place AC Milan host 18th-place Hellas Verona with the visitors needing a result on the final day to survive the drop down to the Serie B. The 2021/22 Scudetto winners Milan were unable to defend their crown this time around. However, a top four finish and a spot in next season’s Champions League will have to do to placate the fans. There is also the possibility that the Rossoneri can leapfrog Inter on the final matchday. A win over Verona combined with an Inter loss away to Torino would see Milan finish third. They’re guaranteed of at least fourth-place, as they lead fifth-placed Atalanta by six points. The Red-and-Blacks are coming off a 1-0 away win over Juventus last Sunday thanks to an Olivier Giroud first-half goal. It was the second victory in a row for Milan after their disappointing Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of bitter rivals Inter.
As things stand now, Verona’s four year stint in the Serie A would come to an end and they would play next season in the Serie B. There is still hope for the visitors, although it must be said they are facing a daunting challenge. Verona will have to better Spezia’s result in order to remain in the top division. New to the Serie A this season is a relegation playoff. This would see Verona and Spezia play a single-legged, 90 minute match to determine which team finishes 17th should they end the season even on points. The away side has failed to win in their last three outings, managing only one point during that time. Verona’s last match finished in a 1-1 draw against Empoli. Their safety may well have been secured if they could have held onto their 1-0 lead. Instead, Verona would wind up conceding in the 98th minute; a goal that may have doomed them to the Serie B.
While Verona have more at stake here, AC Milan will be desperate to finish above Inter after their rivals bounced them from the Champions League. The visitors have been hopeless on the road this season and have picked an extremely difficult spot to try to claim their second road win. Milan, meanwhile, have put up consistent results at the San Siro and are averaging 2.22 points per home contest. Unfortunately for Verona fans, we can’t see them walking away with the three points here. Our AC Milan vs Hellas Verona prediction is for Milan to win.
