Besiktas will seek to throw a spanner in the works in this season’s title run-in in the Turkish Super Lig when they host league leaders Galatasaray on Sunday in round 32. Besiktas come to this match sitting in third place in the standings with 62 points which is eight points behind table toppers Galatasaray. A win here for Besiktas will not only pull them to within five points of Gala but will also be a huge boost for second-placed Fenerbahce who play on Saturday and who are just six points off the pace. Besiktas have been the form team since the season resumed following the devastating earthquake that rocked the country earlier this year and are unbeaten in the nine matches they have played across all competitions. They have won seven of those matches including their last two and will be confident of boosting their title hopes with this match. To help strengthen their belief for a win even more is that for seven straight matches, they have not lost at home against Galatasaray and have won six of those encounters. They beat Umraniyespor 2-0 away from home last time out and have now kept four clean sheets in a row.
Galatasaray will know of their woeful record away to Besiktas but having won the last two matches against Sunday’s opponents, Okan Buruk’s men will be confident of breaking this streak and in turn, boost their chances of winning a first league crown in five seasons. Gala have stuttered in recent weeks and come to this fixture after failing to win their second match in the last four outings when they were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Karagumruk. Fortunately for them, Fenerbahce were unable to take advantage of this as they were also held to a similar 3-3 draw by Istanbulspor. With five matches left to play, the Istanbul club know that fate is in their hands and only they can give the keys to the chasing pack. A mouthwatering showdown with Fenerbahce is set for the penultimate round of the season and Gala will hope to have wrapped up the title by then.
To boost their chances of possibly winning this year’s league title, Besiktas will have to defeat Galatasaray here, something they have been able to do in six of the last seven occasions in which they have hosted this fixture. It is for this reason that we conclude that Besiktas v Galatasaray will end in a win for the home team.
