Uganda Cranes will progress to the quarter finals of the African Nations Championship for the first time ever if they can avoid defeat in their final Group B game. They play Cote d’Ivoire in their next game and going into it, they have four points at the top of the group, while the Ivorians have a point at the bottom. Uganda beat Senegal 1-0 in their last game, building on their 0-0 draw with DR Congo in the first game and will go into this one in need of just a draw. One point will assure Uganda of a top two spot but they have to work on their attack, having failed to score in three of their last five matches. Four of Uganda’s last five matches have had under 2.5 goals scored.
Cote d’Ivoire haven’t put up a very impressive run so far. They haven’t scored a goal in their two matches in this competition and they come into this game with ASEC Mimosas midfielder Mohamed Zoungrana suspended after his sending off in the last game. Cote d’Ivoire are coming from a 0-0 draw with DR Congo, which was a better performance from their 1-0 loss to Senegal in the opening game. In total they haven’t won any of their last three matches but it is their goal scoring woes in this competition that they will want to address. The Ivorians have one win only in their last seven matches in CHAN competition and they’ve scored just one goal in the seven matches.
These two sides come into the game with contrasting fortunes but Uganda are in a much better position, needing only to avoid defeat and they will be through. The highlight in most of these teams’ matches is that they aren’t very good in attack and we will not back both teams to score in this Uganda v Cote d’Ivoire game.
