Missing out on making the final of the inaugural UEFA Nations League, England and Switzerland play out for the third spot at the Estadio D Alfonso Henriques on Sunday. Switzerland were beaten 3-1 by Portugal, as the hosts rode on a hat-trick by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Swiss did play well against the Portuguese and were unlucky to have come up short, as Portugal scored their three goals with just four shots! Regardless of that result, the Swiss side has shown in the tournament that they are a side that can’t be taken for granted. A 5-2 win over top-ranked Belgium underlined that, as does the 6-0 thrashing of Iceland during the group stages. England looked comfortable against Netherlands, but were stunned with a couple of woeful defensive errors in the semi-final. The 3-1 extra time loss was in the end influenced by the errors from John Stones and Ross Barkley. The Three Lions would now have to gather themselves up and be ready for a second third-place playoff in a row under Gareth Southgate. Like they have shown in the qualifiers, England can score goals at will and if they summon that spirit, we are in for a good encounter.
Switzerland have scored in ten of their last 11 competitive fixtures.
Switzerland have lost five of their last ten fixtures.
England haven’t lost any of their last 11 encounters against Switzerland.
The bet of our experts
England have a great record against Switzerland have never lost to them in 11 previous occasions. Their last three wins against Switzerland have all come with clean sheets, but this game might see goals at both ends. There is very little as consolation for a side to finish third and the motivation factor could be missing. That said, don’t expect this game to meander along. An exciting match with goals is in the wait!
