Real Madrid host Shakhtar at the Bernabeu for the third round of their Champions League group, as they look to strengthen their foothold at the top of the standings. Los Blancos were held to a draw at the weekend against Osasuna, which saw their bitter rivals Barcelona go top on goal difference. It was also the first time the Madrid side lost points after ten consecutive wins in all competitions. Ancelloti’s side have home advantage to rejoice however, being unbeaten in their last sixteen twelve home games. It is also peculiarly, the third consecutive year that they meet Shakhtar at the group stages, with Real winning both of their games last year but Shakhtar doing the double two years ago.
The Ukrainian side returned strongly from the break, dismantling Metalist Kharkiv 6-1 away from home. They are also in an excellent position in their group, having taken four points from a possible six, and now travel to a familiar ground, given that they’ve been pitted against Real Madrid for the third consecutive time in the group stages. Shakhtar have been efficient on the road of late, winning four of their last five away and scoring fourteen goals in the process. They will aim to stay competitive and could very well do that, losing with a goal’s margin and beating Real in their last two encounters in Madrid.
