The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League is underway with this Group F showdown between PSG and Borussia Dortmund. PSG were likely caught looking ahead to this matchup on Friday when they lost 3-2 at home to Nice in Ligue 1. With only two wins from the first five in the league, PSG will be desperate to respond with a strong showing in Europe. Luis Enrique opted to play a near full-strength starting 11 on Friday with the likes of Mbappe, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele and Hakimi all in the team. He’ll likely start with the same front three on Tuesday and we should see Marquinhos and Ugarte return to the fray. The loss to Nice snapped what was an encouraging two match winning streak for the Parisians which saw them net seven goals. Defense remains an issue in the early stages of the 2023/24 campaign as PSG have managed only a single clean sheet in their five appearances.
Dortmund stormed back on the weekend against Freiburg to win 4-2 thanks to three unanswered goals in the second half. It was a much-needed result for the Black and Yellow who had previously drawn two straight in the Bundesliga. They’ve now won two and drawn two in the German top-flight, putting them seventh in the standings but just two points off the top. An earlier 6-1 win over a fourth-tier side in the German Cup means that Dortmund are still unbeaten in competitive fixtures in the 2023/24 season. However, they’ll face their toughest test so far with a trip to the French capital in a fixture that they lost 2-0 back in 2020. The German club has now conceded in their last three straight which is a worry ahead of this matchup. Dortmund has also yet to keep a clean sheet as the away side as they have allowed four goals in three road trips.
Another high-scoring encounter could well be on the cards at the Parc des Princes given the amount of attacking talent on the pitch. This is doubly so given the goal glut that both teams have experienced in their respective recent league fixtures. Kylian Mbappe is in scorching form with seven goals in four Ligue 1 appearances so far. It’s difficult to imagine Dortmund containing the 24-year-old Frenchman and Mbappe will fancy his chances at extending his scoring streak. On the other side, Dortmund have now netted six goals in their last two outings. With PSG’s defense looking shaky, the visitors should be able to net at least one. Our PSG vs Dortmund prediction is for both teams to score + over 2.5 goals.
