Bottom of the Championship Peterborough face a mammoth task when they host Premier League leaders Manchester City for the fifth round of the FA Cup in midweek. The visitors have been in rip-roaring form this season and lead the English top flight with 66 points through 27 matches. City’s last match was a 1-0 away win against Everton, a low scoreline by Guardiaola’s lofty goal scoring expectations and their last FA match was a 4-1 home win over Fulham to advance to this stage. The hosts Peterborough can stake a strong claim to be the worst team in the Championship having won only five of their 33 matches and their -42 goal differential is almost double the next lowest. It’s been a tough season for Posh fans as the season will almost surely end in relegation and they would need a minor miracle to progress any further in the FA Cup. Their last match was a heavy 3-0 home loss to 18th place Hull City.
Peterborough are on quite a remarkable goal scoring drought and have only scored one goal in their last six matches. Going up against one of the world’s best defenses in this match, that streak is unlikely to come to an end here. City have the Premier League’s best defense, conceding only 17 goals in 27 matches and keeping a league high 16 clean sheets. With the local derby coming up against Manchester United on the weekend, manager Pep Guardiola is likely to rotate his squad. However, the depth of this City squad is simply fantastic and even their second team is better than most Premier League teams. Although they were able to bounce back after the gut-wrenching Spurs defeat with a narrow 1-0 victory at Everton, the manner in which they went about it was far from convincing. Peterborough could be on the wrong side of a hiding here as City will want to get back in a goal scoring groove before the match against United.
