Nicolas Jarry (qualifier) and the unseeded Pedro Martinez will face off for only the second time in their careers on Thursday in the second round of the Rio Open. Martinez won the only other previous meeting between the two by straight sets at last year’s Austrian Open. Jarry, the world number 139, started his tournament in the qualifying rounds and has won all three of his matches by straight sets. He shocked third seed Lorenzo Musetti in the first round, allowing the world number 18 just one game in the second set. His rise from the qualifying rounds at the Australian Open to reach the second round at the major for the first time in his career saw him get back into the world’s top 150 and he has now risen all the way to 111th in the live ranking. A win over Martinez will see him rise all the way to 102.
Pedro Martinez is having an inconsistent season and has only won three of his seven matches in 2023. The latest of which was a straight sets win over the unseeded Cristian Garin in the first round here in Rio. He started the year ranked 76 in the world and moved to a season-high 58 after making the quarterfinals in Pune but he has since dropped all the way down to 113th in the live ranking. The match will be played on an outdoor clay court and the winner will advance to the quarterfinal where a tie against sixth seed Sebastian Baez or Juan Pablo Varillas awaits.
Nicolas Jarry has hit a purple patch in Rio and we expect him to ride it out against Pedro Martinez who has won successive matches just once this season and has struggled on clay surfaces. Our prediction for Nicolas Jarry v Pedro Martinez is a win for Jarry in straight sets.
