Manchester City have already won Group C and in quite convincing fashion. The Blues had a 100% record until their 0-0 draw with Porto last week and with 13 points they have already qualified in first place As for Marseille they finally scored in the Champions League at the fifth time of asking last week as they beat Olympiacos 2-1 and claimed their first points of the campaign and if they are able to better the Greek club’s result, they will clinch third place and a Europa League spot.
City recorded back-to-back league wins for the first time this season as they saw off Fulham 2-0. The home side have some ground to make up domestically but they have shown their better form in Europe. City have kept a clean sheet in four of their five matches thus far and boast the best defence in the competition, alongside Chelsea, having conceded just one goal. Pep Guardiola’s side are unbeaten in six at the Etihad Stadium and have won five times in that period keeping three clean sheets across their last four matches.
Marseille didn’t even score in their first four group matches and things were looking bleak for Andre Villas-Boas' team but all of a sudden a win over Olympiacos has them in contention for European football after Christmas. A point would do Marseille so long as Olympiacos are beaten by Porto but it won’t be an easy task as they have struggled away from home on the continent in recent years. They have lost nine of their last 15 away games in European competition and been beaten in seven of their last 12 visits to England.
