Istanbul plays host to the final of the 2023 UEFA Champions League with English club Manchester City taking on Italian side Inter Milan. Manchester City are seeking a historic treble after already bagging the Premier League and lifting the FA Cup over rivals Manchester United last weekend. It would be the first Champions League crown for the Sky Blues and legendary manager Pep Guardiola’s third time lifting the famous trophy. City came close in 2021 when they reached the final but would ultimately come up short against fellow English club Chelsea in Porto. There is a different aura about this iteration of the team however, as Manchester City have looked near unbeatable in stretches this season. The Premier League champions' most recent result was the aforementioned 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester United. The result put an end to a two game winless run which included the team’s first loss in the last 27 fixtures across all competitions. The Citizens are unbeaten in their Champions League campaign this season, winning seven of their 12 total matches and drawing the other five.
Serie A third-place finishers Inter come into this final as significant underdogs to pull off the upset. The 2010 Champions League winners have done excellently to reach the final for the first time in over a decade. However, Inter didn’t face the toughest of paths to Istanbul, overcoming Porto, Benfica and rivals AC Milan in the semi-final to reach this stage. They can take confidence from the fact that they have finished the season on a terrific run of form. Inter have won 11 of their last 12 games across all competitions which includes a Coppa Italia final win over Fiorentina two weeks ago. The Italians’ attack has been firing on all cylinders lately as Inter have scored in 12 of their last 13 matches, netting 32 total goals during that stretch (2.46 average per game). They’ll have to be at their best to outscore this high-powered City offense that blasted four goals past Real Madrid in their last Champions League appearance.
We simply can’t see past Manchester City in this one given the overall season that they have had up to this point. A strong case can be made that Guardiola’s team is among the very best the game has ever seen. Inter will need to play their absolute best football while also having a healthy dose of luck if they are to walk away with the Champions League trophy here. When Manchester City win, they tend to do it in convincing fashion. There is an incredible amount of attacking talent at their disposal which should lead to them winning this match by a multiple goal margin. Our Manchester City vs Inter prediction: Manchester City -1 European handicap.
