Manchester City’s defence of the Club World Cup title is well on course after winning their opening match. Sitting second in Group G, they next face bottom-placed Al Ain, seeking to secure their place in the knockouts. Read on for our prediction of this match.
The city’s campaign started with a comfortable 2-0 win over African representatives Wydad Casablanca. Phil Foden starred for City in the game, and the Premier League giants will be counting on the youngster once again.
Generally, the win extended City’s good run at the Club World Cup to three straight wins and a 9-0 goal aggregate.
Al Ain looks like others who would choke under City’s grip. The Asian representatives suffered at the hands of Italian giants Juventus on matchday one, losing 5-0. This group was always going to be tricky for the likes of Al Ain.
Finalists in the 2018 Club World Cup, Al Ain don’t look like they have the capability to trouble City. Their only previous meeting with Manchester City was in a 2014 friendly match, and that too ended in a 3-0 defeat.
Al Ain arrived for this competition unbeaten in seven outings, but the levels here are quite elevated. For a side whose only previous participation ended in the final, the UAE side could turn out to be this group’s whipping boys.
Both of Manchester City’s goals came in the first half against Wydad. They also scored in the opening 45 minutes against Fulham and Bournemouth earlier. Meanwhile, Al Ain conceded four of the five goals against Juventus in the opening 45 minutes, and there is a possibility for the same here.
They’ve also been prolific in the first half in most of their matches, so we expect plenty of goal action in that period. Our prediction for Manchester City v Al Ain is for the first half to have the most goals.
