It’s the last 16 of the Coppa Italia and Inter Milan will host Cagliari at the San Siro. Inter Milan were forced to settle for a point at the weekend as Atalanta turned up the heat in the second-half to earn a well deserved point. Lautaro Martinez gave a Inter the lead early on before Robin Gosens equalised on the 75th minute and Luis Muriel had a chance to win it but he missed a penalty so Inter were lucky to get anything at all. Antonio Conte’s side are now on 46 points, one ahead of Juventus however they have played a game more with Juventus not playing to Sunday 12th. Cagliari were undone by the other half of Milan on Saturday in AC when Zlatan scored his first goal back in Serie A alongside Rafael Leao to leave Cagliari on 29 points in 6th place, the final European place.
Cagliari have already beaten Chievo and Sampdoria in this Cup while Inter will just enter at this stage. Both those wins were achieved at home and now they will be on the road. Cagliari are winless in five losing their last four games including their last two away from home. The visitors have failed to score in their most recent defeats to AC Milan and Juventus.
Inter are unbeaten in four losing most recently to Barcelona in the Champions League but they remain undefeated in the Serie A since they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Juventus. In 13 games since they have won 9 of 13 games. They have taken 21 points from 10 games at home and even though I expect Conte to rotate his side I feel that this season they have the strength in depth to do so efficiently. Inter signed well in the Summer and Conte will be keen to get some much needed silverware in that trophy cabinet.
With rotation a certainty here for both teams it will be about who has the stronger in reserve. I can see both teams scoring here despite Cagliari struggling of late. Diego Godin could be in line for a start for Inter with the Uruguayan not playing as regularly now on his latter days and he could prove quite a resistance in defence so that Inter can drive on for a victory. I’m going to tip Inter to win and over 2.5 goals in this game.
