The match

The Derby della Madonnina is set to kick off on the weekend with Inter taking on AC Milan at the San Siro for matchday 21 of the Italian Serie A. Inter have moved up to second in the standings following their 2-1 win over Cremonese in their last league outing after their rivals dropped points in previous matchday. The Nerazzurri have now compiled a record of 13 wins, one draw and six defeats, putting them on 40 points and two points ahead of third, fourth and fifth-place who are all even on 38 points. Inter still, however, trail leaders Napoli by a massive 13 points as Gli Azzurri continue their seemingly unstoppable title charge. Inter’s last fixture was a 1-0 win over Atalanta in the Coppa Italia and they’ll be looking for their fifth win from the last six matches across all competitions with the three points here. Manager Simone Inzhaghi has experienced recent success over his counterpart Stefano Pioli, with his Inter team getting the better of AC Milan in the Italian Supercup just two weeks ago.

Milan will be hoping to avenge their recent Supercup loss at the hands of their rivals but are not in a good run of form at the moment. A recent stretch of just one win in their last seven matches across all competitions has the Rossoneri all the way down to fifth in the league standings with 37 points from their 20 matches played. The defending Serie A champions have looked dreadful on the defensive side of the ball in recent matches, something that is even more of a surprise given how solid their rearguard was during the title winning campaign last season. Milan have now conceded 14 goals in their last four matches alone following their humiliating 5-2 home loss to Sassuolo last week. The recent dip in defensive form also means that Milan have now conceded 29 goals in the league so far this season, only two shy of their 31 goals against total from the entirety of last season.

Key Statistics

  • Milan have conceded in eight consecutive competitive matches, giving up a total of 19 goals during that stretch for an average of 2.38 per game.
  • Inter have kept three clean sheets from their previous five matches across all competitions.
  • Inter have scored in 10 consecutive competitive matches and have only failed to find the net twice in the Serie A this season.
  • Inter manager Simone Inzhaghi has a lifetime record of eight wins, four draws and five defeats against Milan manager Stefano Pioli.

The bet of our experts

These are two teams headed in very different directions given their recent form despite being separated by just three points in the league standings. Milan’s dropoff has in part been down to the absence of key central defender Fikayo Tomori, who lasted only 24 minutes in a 4-0 beatdown at the hands of Lazio and was forced to miss the 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Sassuolo in the last match. He’ll miss out again here, which could spell trouble for an already reeling Milan defense. They’ll also be without first-choice keeper Mike Maignan as well as key defensive midfielder Ismael Bennacer, leaving even more holes in the Milan starting 11. Inter are in the much better form of the two sides and should be able to record another victory over their city rivals here. Our Inter vs AC Milan prediction: Inter to win
