Zurich host Arsenal for the opening round of a Europa League group also containing PSV and Bodo/Glimt. When looking at the Swiss Super League table, it is quite hard to conceive that this team were crowned Swiss champions three months ago. Zurich look unrecognisable at the new campaign, and are thus sat last at the table with a mere two points from their first seven games. The recent loss to Lugano was the team’s fifth this season, and the third at home in Zurich’s last five games. To make matters worse, the hosts have the worst attack in the league and the second worst defence, with only lowly newcomers Winterthur exhibiting worse numbers than the champions. Zurich reached this stage by eliminating Linfield and then Hearts, after being defeated by Qarabag for the qualifiers of the Champions League.
Arsenal’s perfect Premier League start came abruptly to an end. In their first crunch game of the season, Arteta’s men lost 3-1 to Manchester United and saw their first loss in the new campaign. They had won all of their past six games, scoring nineteen goals in the process. Arsenal are returning to Europe after a one-year hiatus, with the team last reaching the semi-finals of the competition, only to be eliminated by winners Villareal. They have also been strong away from home, winning four of their last five outings. It should also be noted that the game will not take place at Letzingrud, Zurich’s traditional home stadium, but at neighbouring Kybunpark in St. Gallen.
