Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas will renew their rivalry on Saturday in their semifinal duel at the Rome Masters. Before this year’s tourney, in three earlier appearances, Medvedev had never won a match in Rome. This time he has risen to be among the favourites to win the title. He has lost only one set in his four matches, and beat qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The world number three has played only one tour final on clay in his career. He also last played a Masters semifinal on clay in 2019 in Monte-Carlo. The hard-court specialist has been one of the form players this season with 37 wins from 42 matches and already has four titles in the bag. Of his seven wins against Tsitsipas, only one has come on clay. That however was four seasons ago.
Fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas has won four matches against Medvedev including the last two encounters. Tsitsipas is targeting back-to-back finals at this tournament, where fourth seed Casper Ruud or seventh seed Holger Rune lie in wait. He also has one win on clay in this fixture back in 2021 on his way to the French Open final. The world number five was a losing finalist last season in Rome. Having been to two finals already this year, he will fancy his chances of reaching back-to-back finals. The Greek number one is more comfortable on clay than Medvedev and has played 11 tour finals on the surface. This season he has again been superb on clay where 13 of his total 27 wins have come. He beat 15th seed Borna Coric in the quarters and is now the only player left in the competition yet to drop a set.
Both these players have had success against each other on clay. Tsitsipas though has fared much better on the surface than Medvedev not only this season but over the course of their careers. With this key stat, our take for Daniil Medvedev v Stefanos Tsitsipas is for Tsitsipas to win.
