Chelsea went top of the English Premier League on Saturday night with a 2-1 win over Leeds to round off a fantastic week for the Blues. Frank Lampard’s side clinched first place in Group E of the Champions League with a 4-0 crushing of Sevilla last Wednesday while Krasnodar defeated Rennes 1-0 for their first win of the campaign to take third spot and will drop down to the Europa League Round of 32 after Christmas.
Olivier Giroud gave Lampard something to think about has he netted a hat-trick in the win over Sevilla last week and the Frenchman was on hand to score again in Chelsea’s win over Leeds. The striker could continue in the side here but with Chelsea already top of the group, Lampard could opt to rest some of his key players. Nonetheless, Chelsea have the joint best defensive record in the competition having conceded just one goal from five group games and have kept a clean sheet in eight of their last 11 matches. The Blues have managed to score 18 goals across their last seven games against Russian opposition and they hammered Krasnodar when they travelled to Russia on matchday two by four goals to-nil.
Krasnodar picked up a 5-0 win in their domestic league to go alongside their 1-0 victory over Rennes in midweek and their first CL campaign will go down as a successful one with third place now theirs. The club won their first ever Champions League game at home to Rennes last week after three straight defeats but they have lost five of their last six games on the road including their last three. The visitors have won just five of their 18 games away from home in 2020 and lost 3-2 in their last European away game in Sevilla.
