Matchday 26 of the Bundesliga sees second place Borussia Dortmund looking to close the gap on leaders Bayern Munich when they host Arminia Bielefeld at the Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. Dortmund trail the Bavarian giants by nine points but can cut the lead to just six points with their game in hand. They come into this game with the advantage of having two weeks rest due to their last fixture against Mainz being postponed to the 16th - a needed respite given Dortmund’s recent injury struggles. The hosts last game played was a 1-1 draw away to Augsburg and are on a run of five wins from their last seven in the league. Their opponents, Arminia, hold a slim two point lead over Hertha and the relegation zone meaning that every point from here on out will be absolutely crucial. They’ve done a good job at grinding out points however, as they have amassed 25 points despite scoring just 22 league goals - the lowest total in the division.
Arminia have been able to depend on their good defensive record to earn them points this campaign despite struggling to score. Their 33 goals conceded in 25 matches is the fifth best defensive record in the Bundesliga and they rarely find themselves conceding large totals - giving up more than two goals only four times this season. However, Dortmund were one of teams to put multiple goals past the visitors as the reverse fixture finished 3-1 to BVB earlier in the season and a repeat result could be on the cards. While the hosts will be without a number of key players, most notably Erling Haaland, who manager Marco Rose stated is fit but won’t start, Dortmund have plenty of attacking depth in the side and should be able to record a comfortable victory today. Dortmund have a strong home record of 10 wins from 12 matches, notching 39 goals while the visitors have lost six of 12 away from home, only scoring 10.
