Qualifier Fabian Marozsan will hope to continue with his giant slaying campaign at the Rome Masters when he faces 15th seed Borna Coric in the fourth round on Tuesday. Marozsan has defeated two top players already, including second seed Carlos Alcaraz, and will be confident of upsetting another. Borna Coric will be aware of the threat Marozsan poses even as he seeks to reach the quarterfinal in Rome for the first time. The Croat is in his seventh appearance in Rome and is only now playing in the second week of competition. Prior to this season, he had only made it as far as the third round which was back in 2019. Last year he was eliminated in the first round. The world number 16 has dropped one set in his two matches. He has taken his win tally for the season to 13 from 22 matches, with six of those coming on clay.
Fabian Marozsan produced the biggest upset in the third round when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz, and is tipped to go all the way. The win was not only a massive shock in Rome but also the biggest win of his career; he had never defeated a top-10 player before. Marozasan, who started his Rome debut in the qualifying rounds, has also beaten 32nd seed Jiri Lehecka here. This run has seen him move up 21 places in the live rankings after picking up 102 points. He is now at number 114 which is a new career high for him. The year 2023 has started superbly for the Hungarian, as earlier in March he won his first title of the season – the Challenger Circuit in Antalya. He has spent the majority of his season playing on clay where he has won 16 of 23 matches.
Marozsan produced the biggest upset of the tournament with his win over Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. It may have been down to a busy schedule Alcaraz has had but Maroszan will build on the momentum. Coric hasn’t had the best of times on clay this season which may not work for him here. Our prediction for Borna Coric v Fabian Marozsan is for Marozsan to win.
