Chasing their first European semi-final since 2001/02, German club Bayer Leverkusen will hope to make their home first-leg count in the Europa League quarter-finals against competition debutants Union Saint-Gilloise from Belgium. Leverkusen started this season in the Champions League dropping a tier below after finishing third in Group B behind Porto and Club Brugge. They then had a thrilling knockout round play-off against Monaco, needing penalties to progress after finishing 5-5 on aggregate. The round of 16 was a straight forward assignment with the German club blanking Hungarian club Ferencváros 4-0. Recent form for Leverkusen has been impeccable with seven straight wins in all competitions, bookended by a 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend. They are currently sixth in the Bundesliga and also bring the confidence of a four-game winning streak at this venue.
Union Saint-Gilloise topped their Group D of the Europa League earlier in the season, ahead of another German club Union Berlin with four wins and one draw from their six matches. As luck would have it, they went on to face the same side Union Berlin in the round of 16. They overcame the Germans once more, this time by a 6-3 aggregate score after drawing 3-3 in Germany. That draw encapsulates their season as the Belgians have won three and drawn one of their four away matches in this competition. They are in pretty good form coming into this match as well, winning five and drawing two of their last seven competitive matches and staying second in the Belgian league.
