Matchday 22 of the Spanish La Liga sees leaders Barcelona looking to extend their lead atop the table when they host underachieving Sevilla at the Camp Nou. Barcelona lead rivals Real Madrid by five points in the standings currently with their record of 16 wins, two draws and only one defeat putting the Blaugrana on 50 points with half of the season in the books. The Catalonian giants have yet to lose on home soil in the league this season, racking up seven wins and two draws from their nine outings. In addition has been their fantastic defensive record which has seen Barcelona concede just one goal at the Camp Nou in La Liga. Barcelona’s flawless defensive home record has given them the best overall defense in the league with just seven total goals conceded and a league high 14 clean sheets from 19 matches. The hosts are coming off a 2-1 away win against Real Betis in their last fixture, making it six straight wins across all competitions in 90 minutes.
On the other side is Sevilla who are languishing in 13th-place in the La Liga table with just 21 points from 19 matches so far. Los Nervionenses are just two points above 18th-place Cadiz but have shown encouraging signs in recent weeks that they’ll surely be looking to build upon. Sevilla are coming off a 3-0 home win over Elche, a result which has made it three wins from their last four La Liga fixtures. They’ve also managed to keep three clean sheets from their last four matches but will have to be at their absolute best here to contain this high-powered Barcelona attack. Sevilla have only won two of their nine away trips in La Liga this season and are winless in their last four road trips, drawing two and losing two. Manager Jorge Sampaoli is dealing with a host of injury problems ahead of this fixture, missing players such as Alex Telles, Papu Gomez, Jesus Corona, Jesus Naves and more.
Barcelona have been on a roll in La Liga this season and their defensive home record is truly impressive. Xavi has his side controlling matches and suffocating the opposition at the Camp Nou and we’re likely to see a similar type of match play out on Sunday. Sevilla are certainly improving and have finally been able to string together a few positive results but it's unlikely they’ll be able to get anything out of this match. Look for Barcelona to control the match and win this one with a rather routine 1-0 or 2-0 type of scoreline. Our Barcelona vs Sevilla prediction: under 2.5 goals
