Atletico Mineiro host Athletico Paranaense in what should be a tense battle in the upper echelons of the Brazilian Serie A league table. The Mineiro outfit played out an entertaining 2-2 draw against Palmeiras for the Libertadores quarter-finals. They managed to get a two-goal lead and will be disappointed to see that reduced to a simple draw, after a last minute Palmeiras goal. With regards to domestic form, Atletico Mineiro are not in their best shape. Their run of just one win in the last five league games has seen them drift significantly in the table, currently on seventh place and ten points away from leaders Palmeiras. The defending champions have been strong however at the Mineirao, where they have won four and drawn two of their last seven encounters. While they have won both of their last two home meetings against Paranaense, they have a crucial Libertadores replay tie lurking in midweek, which could see coach Cuca rest some key players.
Paranaense are having a good season so far. Fourth in the league and still in the quarterfinals of the Cup and the Copa Sudamericana, they claimed a 0-0 draw against Estudiantes, which leaves everything open for the replay. In the league, they got an important home win last time out, beating São Paulo 1-0. Their defence appears much improved in recent games, with the visitors keeping four clean sheets in their last six games. Similarly to the Mineiro side, their crucial continental game in midweek could affect their team selection for this one. Paranaense tend to keep things tight away from home, where four of their last five ended in Under 2.5 goals, while the same happened in three of their four past meetings at the Mineirao, so expect a tense game.
