Tottenham travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the EFL Cup. Both teams lost at the weekend so could do with a confidence boosting victory. It's the second time this season that new Spurs boss, Nino Espirito Santo, has returned to his former club. The previous game was in the Premier League and was won 1-0 by his team. The weekend saw Tottenham lose 3-0 at home to Chelsea which may not be as poor a result as it sounds considering the strength of the league leaders. Tottenham will make plenty of changes for this game but so will their opponents. Last season they reached the final of this competition, losing to Manchester City in the final. There were plaudits earlier in the season about the good work Santo was doing with the Tottenham defence, that's all stopped after conceding eight goals in their last three games.
Wolves have made a miserable start to the new season and could end up in a relegation battle. The weekend saw them lose 2-0 at home to newly-promoted Brentford, leaving them 16th in the table with three points from five games. Only in the game at Watford have they scored a league goal and have lost seven of their last eight Premier League games. They did find their scoring boots in the EFL Cup second round when winning 4-0 at Nottingham Forest, though it was only 2-0 going into the 86th minute. Over 90 minutes, they have failed to win any of their last four home EFL Cup games. Tottenham have a stronger set of players and even with several team changes (Wolves will also rest players), they can make it into the fourth round.
